Beyond the mooniverse

A liberating perspective on the deceptively idealized Unification Movement and its idolatry of the Moon family. May these insights help misled generous souls to break free from the Unificationist treacherous manipulation and subtly induced spiritual enslavement, with love and forgiveness...

THE LOVELESS PRINCIPLE OF RESTORATION

Having studied both the Bible and religious history, a French philosopher concluded that “God created man in His own image and man did the same in return…”

The Unification Church exemplifies an anthropomorphic vision of God. That’s why by some aspects anyone can be attracted and relate to a certain extent with its theology. God is presented as having a parental heart. He is longing for universal brotherhood and salvation for (almost) all…

However, according to Sun Myung Moon’s teaching, God’s plans to get there comprise many morally mediocre episodes which are indeed very difficult to label as the expression of the Divine Heart. These are rather the mere reflection of a human psyche which is still quite far from being at its best.

Can really God be so mean, so unfair, manipulative or immoral? Can He betray His own principles?

Should the end justify the means? Would our Creator behave as an insensitive barbarian and an expert in retaliation? Unfortunately, such gloomy picture of God that stems from the Old Testament has been updated to become an integrated part of the Unificationist messianic teaching and practice. If such were God’s ways, His ideal of love would forever remain an unreachable dream. The present splits and infightings within the Moon tribe perfectly illustrate such unspiritual and loveless dead-end.

In spite of its claim of pioneering the Completed Testament age, the Unification Movement is actually stuck at the Old Testament stage. Sun Myung Moon has been validating the weird personality of a God who resorts to cheating and lies, punishment and destruction, and who justifies threat and killing in order that “His will be done…”

How can the literal Old Testament legendary accounts ever lead mankind to grow in heart and achieve peace and reconciliation? These imaginary tales were written in tribal fighting times by Hebrews to mainly justify that they were the “chosen people”. In no way, the Old Testament stories are  the Divine pattern for humans to behave nowadays… (Except for the 10 commandments Sun Myung Moon himself had a real hard time to keep up with).

Hence the punishing messiah and his loveless willful indemnity conditions appeared… The Divine Principle revealed itself to be a very effective tool for manipulation. Based on a wrong premise, the loveless principle of restoration and its merciless logic institutionalized spiritual slavery. We are indeed very far from the original appealing claim of the “complete salvation through the second coming”…

The Divine Principle was actually written by Koreans to justify they were the superior “chosen people” with their wonderful Korean messiahs to whom all humankind should absolutely submit.  The Northern part of Korea appears to be a very fertile land for producing both abusive gurus and brutal dictators. It’s probably a persistent byproduct of their ancestral tradition of slavery which was still not so long ago the accepted norm in this area.

Where can we learn God’s loving and caring approach to efficiently educate human hearts? Certainly not in the Unification Movement. It sadly appears it never was within Sun Myung Moon’s domineering spiritual scope to genuinely care for his “True Family”. Never did he really care for his followers he mercilessly exploited just to pursue his personal agenda. Consequently, the members of the True Family and the regimented Unificationist leaders never surpassed their master’s example.

We all have heard Sun Myung Moon boasting about how harshly he had to educate his wife for her to reach “perfection”. No wonder the Movement became a place where love is indeed spoken while cold abuse from the hierarchical power is actually reigning. The all-knowing messiah and “True Parents» perfectly ignored the Pygmalion effect. They didn’t seem to know the power of kindness and encouragement. They thought their God-given mission was mainly to always demand for more atonements, more indemnities and constant financial sacrifices from members…

Where in the True Family is the forgiving love Jesus had exemplified for us? Did Jesus ask us to pray: “Forgive us our sins after we’ll have paid to the last cent for them?  No. He taught: “Forgive us as we forgive to others”. He said “Go and sin no more…” He came to heal, to show the best possible way, not to punish nor to condemn. He came to save us through both teaching and modeling genuine love, not through selling magical “holy wine” or indulgences. He came to strengthen the wounded hearts with love, not to burden them again and again more…

Unificationism has became famous for its permanent focus on members’ “fallen nature” and their recurrent “unworthiness” in order to keep them totally submissive to their so-called saviors.

I remember attending years ago a very strange “spiritual guidance” from Sun Myung Moon’s elder son (from the 3rd wife). He shockingly addressed members in those terms: “You, fallen rotten satanic pieces of shit…” (I suppose he wanted to lift up our hearts, and give us the opportunity to express our gratitude to him for such deep insight). This “sinless True Son” who was supposed to become the messiah’s successor had sadly become a drug addict. Even though he was born in the sole Divine Family having ever existed on earth, and had been raised by the messiah himself, he definitely appeared more as an expert in scatology than in eschatology…

Sun Myung Moon deceived himself through the delusion of having received a divine mandate. He was a bogus messiah whose spirituality actually evoked the worse of the Old Testament primitive idolatry. He also integrated in the Unificationist tradition the worst abusive and deceitful misconceptions from Christian history. Like the Catholic Church in the middle Ages, the Unificationists emphasized again the paid salvation or Indulgences for both members and their ancestors. This modern day cosmic con facilitated the building of a luxurious marble palace for the Moons’ glory. Meanwhile a shady Korean shaman was pocketing a nice slice from the donations made by gullible loyal members.

Sun Myung Moon was an intelligent deluded and stubborn man. He was a poor teacher and the Unification Movement has really been a poor school. Nonetheless Unificationists remained trapped in this weird mental prison they have repeatedly been trained to see as the best way to “please God” and "comfort God's heart"..

Like North Koreans, they believe they are temporarily living in an imperfect paradise. But soon they will be in their ideal Kingdom which has slightly been postponed for justified “providential” reasons. So they keep longing for this imminently coming Kingdom. An ideal Korean Kingdom, of course…
